Newhaven Tennis Club 70th anniversary 2006 |
|
The Club was formed in 1936. Next to the
bowling green there used to be two grass courts and
one of these was the club court. |
|
During the war the club was closed
because the recreation ground was closed, but there
was a court in Second Avenue where the bungalows 36 to
42 now are. |
|
This court did not operate for very long
because 2 large water tanks were built on the site to
provide water for the fire brigade if necessary. |
|
These tanks were eventually moved and the
bungalows built. The club reopened at Court Farm Road soon after the war (1947/48?) and the second grass court together with the then third, hard court (now the MUGA -multi use games area) was hired if ever the club had a tournament or matches. With the development of Court Farm Road, although the bowling club remained, the tennis courts (still grass) were moved to the east side of the recreation ground where the car park now is just outside the recreation ground. The courts were not on this site for very long as cricket balls quite often arrived on the courts!! Hence the move to the current site. Like all clubs, the Tennis Club has had its ups and downs regarding membership and siting but after 70 years it is still going strong.
